A woman in Nanjing City, Jiangsu Province died on November 22, 2025, months after she was sentenced to three and a half years and fined 30,000-yuan for her faith in Falun Gong.

Ms. Sun Guangyu, whose age was unknown, recovered from cancer through practicing Falun Gong. After the Chinese Communist Party started persecuting Falun Gong in July 1999, she held firm to her faith and was repeatedly targeted.

Her latest prison sentence was triggered by an arrest on January 5, 2023. More than twenty police officers broke into her home that morning and confiscated her Falun Gong books, informational materials, printer, and several thousand yuan of bank notes printed with Falun Gong messages. She was not in, but was arrested as soon as she returned home.

The police took Ms. Sun to the Yongyang Police Station and then to the Nanjing City Detention Center. She was found to be unfit for detention and released on bail.

The Yuhua District Court sentenced Ms. Sun to three and a half years around May 2025. Because of her poor health, she was not ordered to serve time right away. The court and police, however, kept harassing her at home to see when she’d be well enough to be put in jail. The authorities also suspended her pension and refused to return the contributions she made to her retirement account. The relentless persecution eventually claimed her life on November 22, 2025.

Ms. Sun’s death capped her decades of suffering at the hand of the communist regime. Prior to her latest persecution episode, she was given an unknown term of forced labor in 2008. While held at the Jurong Labor Camp, she suffered a gastric hemorrhage due to torture and was released on parole. Before she made a full recovery, the police put her back in the labor camp. She was again tortured to critical condition and released on parole again.

On November 3, 2009, agents from the local 610 Office seized Ms. Sun and took her to the Jurong Labor Camp. It was unclear whether they gave her a new forced labor term or intended to have her finish her previous one. During the required physical exam, she was found to have a tumor in her stomach. The labor camp recommended she be released on parole.

The 610 Office agents however took her straight to the Baima Brainwashing Center. They didn’t render her any medical attention or allow her family to visit her.

After Ms. Sun was eventually released, she did the Falun Gong exercises and gradually recovered. She opened a paint shop to make a living. While she was tending to her shop on May 24, 2011, a group of officers from the Lishui County Police Department and the Nanjing City Police Department suddenly broke in and searched her business. They took her to the Baima Brainwashing Center and held her there until June 10 that year.

Unable to cope with the relentless persecution, Ms. Sun’s husband divorced her.

Ms. Sun and two other Falun Gong practitioners went to a fair in neighboring Maanshan City, Anhui Province on April 21, 2016. They talked to fellow shoppers about Falun Gong and were reported to police. They were taken to the Bowang Police Station and then the Maanshan City Detention Center. It was unclear when they were released.
