(Minghui.org) Mr. Yu Chunbo, from Changchun City, Jilin Province, finished serving a 3.5-year term in May 2024. He recently wrote to Minghui.org and recounted the brutal torture he experienced in prison between February and May 2022.

Mr. Yu was arrested on November 12, 2020 for practicing Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999. He was later sentenced to 3.5 years and sent to Gongzhuling Prison on February 24, 2022.

Minghui.org previously reported on Mr. Yu’s torture as witnessed by insiders (see the related reports for details). Below is his personal account of the torture he suffered in the first three months after he was imprisoned.

“I was transferred to the Gongzhuling Prison on February 24, 2022. The prison admissions office gathered all newly admitted Falun Gong practitioners and ordered each of us to sign five blank sheets of paper. I knew they’d later add statements renouncing Falun Gong on the paper so I refused to comply. While others were assigned to different cells after they signed the paperwork, I was singled out and kept in the office.

“They took me to a third-floor room with no surveillance cameras. Two guards and two inmates ordered me to write various statements to renounce and denounce Falun Gong. When I said no they grabbed my hair and slapped me on one side of my face about 50 times. Five other people joined in and the nine of them together held me down, some stomped on me and others kicking me.

“I don’t remember how long they beat me. After they became exhausted, they took off my pants and whipped me with a bamboo board. I screamed in pain. They did not stop until dusk. They assigned me to a cell and dragged me there. My buttocks were so badly beaten that they were oozing yellow liquid. My pants stuck to my flesh. I didn’t dare to sit or stand, or it’d hurt like crazy. I could only lie on my stomach at night. Any slight movement would tear open my wounds, causing excruciating pain.

“I didn’t expect to be subjected to another round of torture the very next day. Guards Shen Jidong and Zhao Xu, along with inmates Ma Tao and Li Jianyang, showered me with punches and kicks. They then stuffed dirty socks into my mouth and pressed me down on the ground. They took off my pants to shock me with electric batons. They also used a metal ruler to beat my buttocks, adding salt to injury. They claimed their beating would not be ‘effective’ until they saw blood.

“As I was bleeding, they rubbed salt on my wounds to ‘prevent me from getting infected.’

“That day, the torture session lasted about two hours.

“On the third day of my prison admission, the guards summoned me to their office for a third round of torture session. The scabs that had just formed on my wounds were once again opened, with salt rubbed into them. This time they also poured on alcohol. My muscles twitched uncontrollably due to pain.

“The guards said it was still not enough and inserted an electric baton into my anus to shock me. I gritted my teeth but remained firm in my faith.

“The fourth day once again began with torture. More than twenty guards swarmed over me and beat me savagely. They also shocked me with electric batons. I rolled on the ground in pain. I don’t know how much time passed before I collapsed on the ground with my mouth wide open, gasping for air. I felt that I was about to die.

“In the next three months, I was forced to stand from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. every day. My feet became extremely swollen. The guards only gave me a few morsels of food for each meal. I was soon reduced to skin and bones. They also threatened me every day. I was on edge all the time. Whenever I heard the sound of a door opening, I dreaded it and thought I was about to be tortured again.

“Non-practitioner inmates were allowed cigarette breaks. The guards would call them by waves [similar to lunch waves in U.S. schools] to use the cigarette room. Since ‘wave’ in Chinese sounds similar to ‘Bo’ in my name, the guards’ calling ‘the first wave,’ ‘the second wave,’ and ‘the third wave’ all sounded like they were calling my name. I was extremely nervous, because every time they called my name, it meant savage beating and torture. I almost had a mental breakdown as a result.

“Around March 9, 2022, I suddenly had acute stomach pain and sweated profusely. The guards took me to the prison clinic. I was diagnosed with gastric perforation and needed surgery. It was during the COVID pandemic and outside hospitals were not taking new patients. The prison clinic could only offer gave me nutrient solution in IV drips. After about half a month, I was able to eat a little, and my stomach healed on its own.

“Above was just what I went through during my first three months in the prison. I was continuously tortured until I was released in May 2024.”
