(Minghui.org) A 69-year-old Wuhan City, Hubei Province resident was tried in the Hanyang District Court on January 3, 2025 for her faith in Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999.
Ms. Zhu Huimin, a retired chemistry teacher from the Wuhan City First Business School, was arrested on April 20, 2023, after she was reported by a taxi driver for talking to him about Falun Gong. Her home was raided afterwards and she was taken to the Wuhan City First Detention Center, where she remains.
The Hanyang District Court initially scheduled a hearing for Ms. Zhu’s case for December 13, 2024. Hours before the hearing started, prosecutor Zhang Jing of the Hanyang District Procuratorate suddenly asked to add more evidence to the indictment. Judge Zhu Ran canceled the hearing and instructed the prosecutor to submit an updated version of the indictment.
During the rescheduled hearing on January 3, 2025, prosecutor Zhang accused Ms. Zhu of being a “repeat offender,” because she previously served two forced labor terms totaling two years (2002-2003 and 2008-2009) for practicing Falun Gong. Zhang made it clear that the inclusion of Ms. Zhu’s previous incarcerations in the indictment was to seek a heavier sentence.
Ms. Zhu’s lawyer argued that the labor camp system had been abolished in 2013, rendering such “evidence” inadmissible. Both the judge and prosecutor ignored him.
Ms. Zhu also demanded to know the legal basis on which the prosecutor was attemping to indict her. While Zhang was unable to answer, the judge beat around the bush and kept changing topics.
Ms. Zhu said in her final statement that that she didn’t violate any law in practicing Falun Gong. She vowed to appeal if the judge convicted her.
