Ms. Shi Guizhi was admitted to prison at the age of 74 to serve a four-year term for her faith in Falun Gong, a spiritual discipline that has been persecuted by the Chinese communist regime since 1999. By the time she finished her term in January 2023, she had lost her ability to talk and feeling in her lower body. She remained bedridden and passed away on January 23, 2024. She was 80.
Ms. Shi, of Harbin City, Heilongjiang Province, was born on December 15, 1944. She and her husband, Mr. Zhao Xingyou, both took up Falun Gong in 1996. Soon after, the chronic headaches that had tormented her for 40 years disappeared. After the persecution of Falun Gong began in 1999, the couple used every opportunity possible to share the benefits they had received from the practice with more people.
For spraying the phrase “Falun Dafa is Good” on their courtyard wall, the couple were reported to the Shuangcheng District Police Department and the 610 Office in November 2017, by a worker from the Shuangcheng Real Estate Company.
The police department and the 610 Office then notified the local Shuiquan Township Police Station. Police chief Su Yongsheng and a few officers arrested the couple on November 11, 2017. Ms. Shi was released when she failed the physical exam required for detention. Mr. Zhao was taken to the Shuangcheng Detention Center, but was released six days later.
The police arranged villagers to monitor the couple and make sure that they did not write anything on their courtyard wall, go to the Falun Gong practice sites, or contact any other practitioners.
After the couple were officially arrested on September 10, 2018, the police attempted to take them back into custody. Ms. Shi failed the required physical exam again and was released. Mr. Zhao was admitted to the Shuangcheng Detention Center.
Ms. Shi was again arrested on January 1, 2019. The local court sentenced her to 4 years and Mr. Zhao to 3.5 years days later. She was taken to the Heilongjiang Prison Women’s Prison and Mr. Zhao was transferred to the Hulan Prison in Harbin City.
When Ms. Shi’s prison term ended on January 19, 2023, she was carried out by the guards. She became completely mute and remained unresponsive when her family talked to her; her eyes were dull; she had lost feeling in her legs; and she appeared to be nervous and fearful no matter who she saw. It was obvious to her family that she must have suffered brutal torture in the prison. After being bedridden for a year, she died on January 23, 2024.
