A Mudanjiang City, Heilongjiang Province resident died on March 27, 2025 in the persecution of her faith, Falun Gong. Ms. Chen Jinfeng served one labor camp term and two prison terms totaling 13 years. The relentless torture took a toll on her health and eventually claimed her life. She was 74.

Ms. Chen Jinfeng

Ms. Chen used to work at the Mudanjiang Forestry Radio and Television University as a librarian. She took up Falun Gong in 1998 and soon recovered from many severe ailments, including trigeminal neuralgia, bone hyperplasia, low blood pressure, and myasthenia gravis (a chronic autoimmune neuromuscular disease that causes fluctuating weakness of the skeletal muscles). As she remained firm in practicing Falun Gong after the persecution started in 1999, she was repeatedly arrested, detained and tortured.

In addition to the incarceration and torture she endured over the years, her employer, the Forestry Radio and Television University in Mudanjiang, fired her and withheld her pension since August 2000, which was in line with the persecution policy to “devastate Falun Gong practitioners financially” set forth by former communist Party leader Jiang Zemin.

While Ms. Chen was imprisoned, her then college-age son struggled to finance his education and became malnourished. Although his school suggested he take medical leave, he continued to take classes and did odd jobs to support himself. But due to the lack of financial support, he eventually dropped out and never finished college.

First Two Arrests and Two Years of Forced Labor

Ms. Chen was first arrested on July 24, 2000, after she was followed by the police while distributing informational materials about Falun Gong. The police ransacked her home and confiscated her Falun Gong books, audio recorder and informational materials. She was held at the Mudanjiang City Detention Center for six weeks. The guards extorted 3,000 yuan from her and forced her to pay another 250 yuan for the food cost.

Ms. Chen was arrested again on October 5, 2000 for appealing for Falun Gong in Beijing. At the Huairou County Detention Center, an officer forced her to remain bent over for six hours. They also handcuffed her and pulled the handcuffs forward with a towel, until she collapsed to the ground. Then they stepped on her hands. They also tore up Falun Gong books and verbally abused Falun Gong in front of her.

A few days later, two police officers took her to the Mudanjiang City Liaison Office in Beijing. They extorted thousands of yuan from her to cover their personal vacations in Beijing, before taking her back to Mudanjiang on October 10, 2000. She was held at a local detention center and transferred to a labor camp in January 2001, shortly before the Chinese New Year, to serve a two-year term.

After Ms. Chen was released in October 2002, the police attempted to send her to a brainwashing center. She protested, and the police eventually let her go.

First Prison Term of Five Years After the Third Arrest

Ms. Chen was arrested the third time on April 29, 2003, after being reported for putting up informational materials about Falun Gong. While interrogating her at the Xiangyang Police Station, officers from the Aimin District Domestic Security Division handcuffed her, held her against the ground and stomped on her head.

The police restrained her in a metal chair, force-fed her mustard oil and wrapped her head in a plastic bag. She almost suffocated. They repeated the torture several times. She suffered from intense pain afterwards.

The police attempted to force her to give them information on other Falun Gong practitioners. When she refused, the torture escalated. Sheng Xiaojiang, the deputy head of Aimin District Police Department, shouted, “Beat her to death! No one has to bear any responsibility if she dies.”

Several officers tied her to a chair and pulled her limbs in different directions. One officer also shocked her hands with an electric baton at the same time. She lost consciousness. After she came to, the torture continued. One officer struck her arms, and her arms became black and blue and she could not lift them. They also covered her head and pressed her shins against the edge of a table.

After hours of torture, the police took Ms. Chen to a detention center. She had a bloated stomach due to the mustard oil she was force-fed, which caused her to have difficulty eating or lying down. Once she was unable to breathe and lost consciousness. Her cellmates called the detention center doctor Yang, who remained indifferent and refused to treat her.

The Aimin District Court later sentenced Ms. Chen to five years in prison. Due to her scabies, the Heilongjiang Province Women’s Prison refused to admit her and sent her back to the detention center. The detention center head Yu Changlong was infuriated. He ordered the guards to strip off her clothes and restrain her on a bed in a spread-eagle position for days, without allowing her to use the restroom. Her condition quickly deteriorated.

Ms. Chen was eventually admitted to the prison on September 4, 2004, after spending 16 months in the detention center.

For doing Falun Gong exercises in the prison, Ms. Chen was handcuffed and shackled to a bed in October 2006. She developed a rapid heartbeat and was transferred to the prison hospital in early 2007 after she became incapacitated. She was in serious condition when she was released on April 29, 2008.

Second Prison Term of Six Years After the Fourth Arrest

On April 29, 2009, only a year after Ms. Chen was released, she was arrested again for talking to people about Falun Gong. As she refused to cooperate with the guards at the detention center, they handcuffed her, kicked her in the head until she lost consciousness, stabbed her fingers with needles, and elbowed her in the chest. She had intense chest pain for days and had difficulty breathing and walking.

The Aimin District Court sentenced Ms. Chen to six years in August 2009. She served time at the Heilongjiang Province Women’s Prison and was released on April 29, 2015.

Eventual Death

The police continued to harass Ms. Chen and her son after she returned home. On July 11, 2022, officers of the Yangming Police Station raided her home and confiscated her Falun Gong books and portrait of Falun Gong’s founder. Her son was also taken to the police station twice for interrogation.

After years of incarceration and torture, Ms. Chen was unable to stand or walk on her own. Due to injuries to her internal organs, she had excessive phlegm. She constantly felt weak and kept sweating. Her teeth fell out one after another. She also had chronic oral ulcers. In her final years, her memory began to decline and she often vomited after eating. She eventually died on March 27, 2025, at the age of 74.
