A 75-year-old resident of Daan City, Jilin Province, died on March 27, 2025, less than two months after the death of her daughter, both as a result of the persecution of their faith in Falun Gong.
The mother, Ms. Zhang Fengling, was last arrested on July 15, 2022, and sentenced to ten months around January 15, 2023. Her family was never allowed to visit her or given any updates about her case status. It wasn’t until January 18, 2023, that they managed to find out on their own that their loved one had been admitted to prison. Even today, they still do not know which prison Ms. Zhang served time in.
By the time Ms. Zhang was released in May 2023, she had become extremely weak due to abuse in custody. She often fainted at home. The local social security office suspended her pension during her ten-month imprisonment (totaling nearly 28,000 yuan). A widow, she struggled to make ends meet. The local Huiyang Police Station officers kept harassing her at home and taking her pictures against her will. They also ordered her to sign various paperwork, claiming that all Falun Gong practitioners jailed for their faith must be under strict surveillance for three years after their release.
In addition to Ms. Zhang’s own ordeal, her daughter, Ms. Wang Hongyan, was also targeted for her shared faith. Ms. Wang struggled with poor health and a severe liver condition after she finished serving a four-year term for practicing Falun Gong in 2021. She passed away on February 9, 2025, weeks after she was harassed again. She was 52.
Ms. Wang’s passing dealt a heavy blow to Ms. Zhang. She fell into a coma on March 27, 2025, and died later that day.
Past Persecution of Mother and Daughter
Ms. Zhang took up Falun Gong in May 1997. Her severe stomach condition and other ailments soon disappeared. Ms. Wang took up Falun Gong in 2008 and recovered from her Hepatitis B.
Ms. Zhang was first arrested on November 8, 2000, and later given two years of forced labor. She suffered a severe heart condition and was released on medical parole on December 10, 2001.
Ms. Wang was first arrested on January 31, 2013, while distributing informational materials about Falun Gong in the countryside. She developed high blood pressure in detention and fell into a coma. The Daan City Domestic Security Division released her on bail after forcing her to pay 10,000 yuan. The police later came to her home several times, attempting to arrest and sentence her. She was forced to live away from home and go into hiding.
Ms. Zhang and Ms. Wang were arrested together on October 9, 2017. Ms. Zhang fainted several times at the Zhenlai County Detention Center and was hospitalized. In May 2018, she was sentenced to two years with two years' probation, and her daughter was given four years. They were also fined 5,000 yuan each.
Ms. Zhang’s husband was dealt a blow by his wife and daughter’s arrests and passed away while they were both in detention. Ms. Zhang has lived alone since she was released in the fall of 2018.
