(Minghui.org) Two Falun Gong practitioners in Chengdu City, Sichuan Province stood trial on July 25, 2025 and were both convicted at the end of the court hearing.
Both Ms. Wang Ping and Mr. Yang Yifan, 54, were sentenced to 2.5 years and fined 10,000 yuan. Ms. Wang has indicated that she would appeal the verdict.
Nine people from the two practitioners’ families attended the trial held at the Chenghua District Court on July 25, 2025. The bailiffs took photos of their IDs and didn’t allow them to bring their cell phones into the courtroom. The presiding judge Pu Li and two other judges all wore masks during the trial.
Ms. Wang’s son represented her as a non-lawyer defender and entered a not guilty plea for her.
Mr. Yang’s lawyer, who had promised to defend his innocence, entered a guilty plea for him against his will. The lawyer only submitted the medical records of Mr. Yang’s ailing mother and requested a lighter sentence for him, so that he could be released sooner to take care of his mother.
Mr. Yang couldn’t hear the prosecutor, the judge or his lawyer clearly due to his hearing impairment. He managed to testify in his own defense and insisted that he didn’t violate any law in practicing Falun Gong.
The judge convicted both Mr. Yang and Ms. Wang at the end of the court hearing.
Ms. Wang was arrested near her home on May 10, 2023. She was first held at the Xinjin Brainwashing Center and then transferred to the Chengdu City Detention Center.
Mr. Yang was arrested on May 19, 2023 in Jianyang City, which is under the jurisdiction of Chengdu. His family was kept in the dark of his case status. It wasn’t until December 2024 that they found out that he was detained at the Chengdu City Detention Center.
Details of Ms. Wang’s Arrest, Detention and Trial
Ms. Wang was arrested on May 10, 2023, by officers from the Qinglong Police Station in Chenghua District that oversees her residential area. The police raided her place and confiscated her printer, Falun Gong books, and 30,000 yuan cash.
Ms. Wang was first taken to the Qinglong Police Station and transferred to a secret location the next day with her head covered by a black hood. She only confirmed months later that she was detained at the Xinjin Brainwashing Center, where she was monitored around the clock.
After six months at the brainwashing center, Ms. Wang was transferred to the Chengdu City Detention Center and had her arrest approved. She was charged with “subverting state power.” The police never provided any documents regarding her detention, nor did they inform her family of her arrest and detention at her request.
As Ms. Wang’s family lost contact with her, they reported her disappearance to the Qinglong Police Station, which directed them to report the case to their counterparts in Mianyang City (about 90 miles from Chengdu), where Ms. Wang’s household registration was. Only when the family requested information of the newly-opened criminal case against her with the Chenghua District Procuratorate, did they find out about Ms. Wang’s detention and formal arrest warrant.
In July 2024, Ms. Wang’s son submitted the paperwork to represent her. He went to the court over ten times, demanding to review her case document, but was rejected by judge Pu each time.
It wasn’t until July 10, 2025 that Ms. Wang’s son received a notification from the court to review her case document on July 14. Meanwhile, the court also told him that a court date had been scheduled for July 25. When he reviewed the case document, the judge only allowed him to read it or handcopy the content, without taking photos or making photocopies.
Ms. Wang’s son took time off work on July 18 and travelled from Mianyang to Chengdu to visit her. The detention center rejected his visitation request, with the excuse that he wasn’t listed as her defender on her court appearance notice.
Ms. Wang’s son rushed to the court and demanded the court to provide relevant document for him to meet with his mother. While the judge agreed to arrange a meeting between them, the meeting never materialized before the trial.
During the trial on July 25, Ms. Wang pointed out that the police failed to log the 30,000 yuan confiscated from her on the record. The judge attempted to lead to the narrative that she lost the money herself. Her son demanded the judge to play the video of the home raid taken by the police’s body-cam, but was rejected.
The judge also failed to have the police appear in court to accept cross-examination or have the prosecutor provide legal basis for the persecution of Falun Gong.
When Ms. Wang’s son submitted the cult list issued by the Ministry of Public Security in 2000 which didn’t include Falun Gong, the prosecutor claimed that list wasn’t valid, because it didn’t have an official seal on it.
Ms. Wang added that while the police claimed she sent three text messages about Falun Gong through a bluetooth server, they admitted to her that they couldn’t really verify who sent the messages. To fabricate evidence against her, they deceived her into sending them three messages and then said it was her “who did it.”
