Zhang Xin, a contract police officer in Qian’an City, Hebei Province, suddenly died in late September 2026 while playing a ball sport. He is survived by his wife, two young sons under ten years old, and elderly parents who were both diagnosed with cancer.
Over the past decade, Zhang had actively participated in the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners, likely in the hope of earning a permanent position in the Domestic Security Office and advancing his career. His death raises age-old questions about karmic retribution for one’s actions.
Below are two persecution cases Zhang was involved in.
On October 17, 2012, Ms. Wang Yanqin, a Falun Gong practitioner in Kouzhuang Village, was arrested at home. The police handcuffed her, searched her home, and carried her onto the backseat of the police car. Zhang slapped her in the face, yanked her hair, and hit her head against the car seat. He also shouted at her, “I’m hitting you hard. Even if we beat you to death, we will count you as having committed suicide.”
Ms. Wang was held in a lockup for 15 days and then transferred to a brainwashing center. Two months later, on December 18, she was admitted to a local labor camp to serve a one-year term.
Mr. Song Naiwen, another practitioner of the Yanjiadian Village, was interrogated and beaten by Zhang after he was arrested on July 28, 2013. He was later sentenced to six years and was subjected to brutal torture at the Jidong Prison. He passed away on July 8, 2022.
