(Minghui.org) Ms. Chu Zhanfeng, 63, from Changling County, Jilin Province, was arrested in Daqing City, Heilongjiang Province, on April 25, 2026, because she practices Falun Gong.
Ms. Chu moved to Heilongjiang a few years ago to avoid being persecuted again for her faith. Ms. Chu is a retired teacher and worked at the Liushui Elementary School in Changling County. She used to suffer many severe ailments, including heart disease, cervical spinal stenosis, bone spurs in the lumbar spine and legs, hypertension, and gynecological disorders. After she took up Falun Gong in late 2013, she soon recovered and was felt energetic.
Ms. Chu was arrested at home on October 31, 2016. The police claimed that someone reported her for distributing Falun Gong materials and they identified her in the surveillance camera footage.
Presiding judge Yin Wanxin from the Changling County Court barred Ms. Chu’s lawyer from reviewing her case file. He held a secret hearing of her case on February 13, 2017, but did not inform her lawyer or family. When her family contacted a court official afterward and asked why they hadn’t been contacted he claimed that the court didn’t have the family’s phone number.
Judge Yin sentenced Ms. Chu to 4.5 years and fined her 10,000 yuan on March 28, 2017. Yin read the conviction so quickly that it was almost inaudible.
Ms. Chu appealed to the Songyuan City Intermediate Court. Judge Cong Feng denied her family’s application to be her non-lawyer defender. After the family hired a lawyer for Ms. Chu, judge Cong blocked the lawyer from visiting her, with the excuse that the court-appointed lawyer already visited her. Judge Cong ruled to uphold her original verdict around May 24, 2017.
Ms. Chu was released on April 30, 2021. Three months later, officers from the Dongbei Street Police Station in Changling County harassed her. She was harassed a few more times in March and July 2022, and March, June, and July 2023.
On July 26, 2023, officer Pei Yuanqing of the Changling County Domestic Security Office led six officers to Ms. Chu’s home. She managed to escape. The police ransacked her place and confiscated a copy of Zhuan Falun, the main text of Falun Gong.
Ms. Chu was forced to live away from home to avoid the police. She later moved to Daqing City, Heilongjiang Province. In her spare time, she distributed materials to raise awareness about the persecution, but someone reported her. She was arrested by officers of the Sartu District Police Station on April 25, 2026, and is currently held at the Daqing City Second Detention Center.
